A friend who runs an engineering org told me recently that his team had quintupled their PR throughput in three months. The catch: their incident rate went up by the same multiple. They had not, in any meaningful sense, gotten faster. They had moved the bottleneck — from typing code to reviewing it. The bottleneck had been “generate code that works,” and now the bottleneck is “verify that this code does what we think it does.”
This is the conversation I keep having with engineering leaders in 2026. Generation got cheap. Verification didn’t. And every team I know is in some stage of waking up to the fact that the second one is the actual job.
The verification gap
Verification was never the headline of an engineering org. It happened quietly, distributed across code review, unit tests, end-to-end tests, staging environments, and the senior engineers who could “smell” when something was off. All of that infrastructure was tuned for a world where the cost of writing the wrong thing was a few hours of human time. That cost is now seconds.
When generation drops to seconds, the entire verification stack starts looking under-resourced.
“If your team can generate ten times more code, and your review process is still tuned for the old volume, you are not faster. You are just shipping more bugs, more efficiently.”
Three places to invest
If I were rebuilding an engineering org from scratch in 2026, I’d invest in three places that used to be afterthoughts:
- Automated review — beyond linting. Tooling that catches the most common AI-generated mistakes (hallucinated APIs, missing error paths, drift from existing patterns) before a human ever sees the PR.
- Better evals on top of CI — every meaningful change runs against a curated set of behavior tests, not just unit tests.
- A senior-review queue with explicit throughput targets — because the senior engineers are now the bottleneck, and pretending otherwise just hides the queue.
What this means for hiring
The skill set that scales in this environment is the one that was always underpaid: people who can read code carefully, ask the right questions, and notice when something is subtly wrong. That used to be called “senior engineer” or “tech lead.” It’s about to become the most-valued skill on the team — and the hardest to interview for, because most interviews still test generation, not verification.
If your AI strategy is “we’ll ship faster,” your real strategy needs to be “we’ll verify faster.” That second half is the part nobody is telling you.
